Flight delayed or plans changed? What happens to your Schiphol parking booking
Before you drive in: change it for free
Plans move: a flight is rescheduled, a trip gets a day longer, you take the other car. According to Schiphol’s parking FAQ, you can change, extend or cancel a reservation for its own car parks until 24 hours before the drive-in date and time, using your reservation number on schiphol.nl. Changing the dates, the license plate or your personal details is free of charge.
Two things to watch. Every change gives you a new reservation number, so keep the latest confirmation email; Schiphol says it holds the most complete information. And the online rate only applies with a valid reservation confirmation: without one, you pay the regular drive-up rate.
Cancelling: only with the cancellation option
Whether you get money back depends on a choice you make when you book. Schiphol only refunds the parking charge if you selected the cancellation option when you made the reservation; without it, a cancelled booking is not refunded. If your plans are uncertain, that option is worth weighing against the price difference. Our guide to booking cheap Schiphol parking covers how far ahead to book.
Once you are parked: delays are paid on the way out
After you have driven in, the booking can no longer be extended online. That does not mean a delayed flight home is a problem: Schiphol says it is fine to arrive a little earlier or park a little longer if your flight is delayed or your return date changes. The difference is in the price. Any extra time is charged as an additional fee, which you pay at a pay station when you return, or at the exit gate with the credit card you booked with if you chose credit-card entry.
The reverse does not work: coming back earlier than booked gives no refund, because the space was reserved for you for the whole period.
Getting through the barrier
When you book, you choose how the gate recognises you: by license plate or with a QR code, and some bookings use the credit card you registered. A few practical points from Schiphol’s instructions:
- Different car? Change the license plate on your reservation before you go, which is free. Otherwise the camera cannot match your car to the booking.
- Barrier stays closed? Use the QR code from your confirmation email. Do not press the button for a parking ticket; use the intercom and have your reservation number ready.
- Credit card entry: use the same card you registered on the booking, both in and out.
Independent and off-site car parks
Everything above is Schiphol’s own policy for its car parks. Independent off-site operators and valet services set their own rules on changes, refunds, late returns and what happens when a flight is delayed, so read their terms before you pay. Our checklist for booking independent parking lists what to check.
A short checklist
- Book with your real flight times, and price the options in the estimator first.
- Decide on the cancellation option before you pay; it is the only way to a refund.
- Change dates or the plate at least 24 hours before you drive in; it costs nothing until then.
- Keep the newest confirmation email with its reservation number and QR code.
- If you are late back, simply pay the extra at the pay station or the exit gate.

Frequently asked questions
What happens if my flight home is delayed and I return to Schiphol parking late?
Schiphol says it is no problem if you park a little longer because your flight was delayed, but the extra time may cost more: you pay the additional fee when you return, at the pay station or, if you booked with a credit card, at the exit gate.
Can I change my Schiphol parking reservation?
Yes, until 24 hours before your drive-in date and time. Changing the dates, the license plate or your personal details is free, and you get a new reservation number. Once you have driven in, the booking can no longer be extended.
Do I get money back if I cancel or come back early?
Only if you chose the cancellation option when you booked; without it, cancelling gives no refund. Returning earlier than booked never gives a refund, because the space was reserved for the whole period.
What if I arrive at Schiphol parking in a different car?
Change the license plate on your reservation first, which is free. The barrier recognises your car by its plate; if it does not open, use the QR code from your confirmation email or the intercom, not the ticket button.
Policies can change, so check the current terms in Schiphol’s parking FAQ before you book.
